TOL. Exceptional athletes who know that age is just a number will be coming to Langley for the 2014 BC Seniors Games and a team of volunteers has been chosen to ensure the event is a great success.
The Township of Langley and the City of Langley have appointed members to the Board of Directors for the 2014 BC Seniors Games Society. They are:

President: Milt Kruger

Vice President: Michael Jackstien

Administration Director: Gordon Zacher

Ceremonies Co-Director: Susan Magnusson

Communications Director: Vacant

Friends of the Games Director: Anton Donkers

Medical Services Director: Marilyn Graziano

Promotions Director: Leah Chevallier

Protocol Director: Howie Vickberg

Registration & Results Director: John Jones

Security Director: Gary Bass

Special Events Director: Carly Davies

Sport Director: Tom Watson

Transportation Director: John Cameron

The Directors were announced during Township and City Council meetings held Monday, May 6.

The Society is responsible for planning and organizing the BC Seniors Games, which will be held in the Langleys from September 9 – 13, 2014. Athletes aged 55 plus will be competing in a variety of sports ranging from badminton, bowling, and soccer, to track and field, mountain biking, and golf.
“This is a very exciting, prestigious event and we are thrilled it is in such good hands,” said Township of Langley Mayor Jack Froese. “Langley has a reputation for being an exceptional sports-tourism destination, and the commitment, resources, and knowledge this Board of Directors brings to the 2014 Seniors Games will definitely ensure its success.”

The directors of the Seniors Games Society know what it takes to stage major events: its members have served as directors for Langley Township’s 2010 BC Summer Games, worked with Langley’s Spirit of BC Committee during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, and been instrumental in events such as Langley’s annual Relay for Life.
“The City of Langley is delighted to be hosting the 2014 BC Seniors Games, together with the Township,” said City of Langley Mayor Peter Fassbender. “We look forward to welcoming the athletes, their coaches, and supporters to our City and hope they will enjoy using our athletic facilities. The organizing team, led by Mr. Milt Kruger and Mr. Michael Jackstien, has a wealth of experience to bring to the table as the planning for the Games begins. The City is committed to supporting them in every way we can.”

In early 2013, as requested by the BC Games Society, Mayor Froese and Mayor Fassbender formed a Nominating Committee to identify members of the two communities who would be willing and able to lead an organizing committee for the upcoming Games.
Over the past three months, the Nominating Committee recruited 13 of the 14 nominees for the Board of Directors and the list of candidates was submitted to Township and City Councils for appointment. With the official appointment of its members, the Board is now authorized to deliver the event on behalf of the Province of British Columbia, the Township, and the City. The one remaining vacancy on the Board is to be filled by the Directors.
Over the next 16 months, the Board will work with groups including School District 35, Kwantlen First Nation, Langley Seniors Resource Centre, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Langley Arts Council, Langley Events Centre, Trinity Western University, and Tourism Langley – as well as community volunteers – to organize the Games.
“The 2014 BC Seniors Games is a great opportunity for people from around the province to experience all that the Township and the City of Langley have to offer,” said Mayor Froese. “We have world-class facilities, dedicated volunteers, enthusiastic sports fans, and a very capable Society that is committed to presenting the best Games possible.”

By Mitch Joel. There are certain people that business leaders and marketers should be paying a lot more attention to. Adam Alter is one of those individuals. He recently published his first book, Drunk Tank Pink – And Other Unexpected Forces That Shape How We Think, Feel And Behave, and it is a truly fascinating journey into the relationship between the forces of our environment and how this shapes the outcomes of our lives.

Yes, it’s deep stuff, but it is told in a very fun and compelling way (no dry academic fodder here!). Alter is an assistant professor of marketing and psychology at NYU’s Stern School of Business and psychology department. His research focuses on the intersection of behavioral economics, marketing, and the psychology of judgment and decision-making. He’s also an all-around nice guy.

A Fraser Valley-based duo offering light jazz guitar and vocals is really worth a listen.

JAAZ takes full advantage of Rachel’s considerable vocal abilities in songs spanning the swing era to modern day. Edward provides strong guitar accompaniment and vocals to round out the sound. Some of the artists represented in their repertoire include Etta James, Doris Day, Peggy Lee, Norah Jones and Diana Krall. JAAZ provides a variety of jazz/swing/blues tunes and is equally at home as ambient background entertainment or headline performers.

Rachel Stewart graduated from UBC in 2008 where she studied opera. In her ‘opera life’, she is a coloratura soprano who has performed leading roles with companies in BC and Europe. When she is not doing this, she loves to sing the classic and beautiful songs of bygone eras. Rachel has always had an affinity for this style of music and has filled in for singers, performing with various swing and jazz ensembles. She is happy to be pursuing this avenue further.

Edward Pilkington has 30+ years of professional experience in various genres of music. For the last 7 years, he had been playing in the Chinguacousy Swing Orchestra, as well as the Hot Club de Brampton and is comfortable performing in any kind of setting. Edward taught music for 16 years at Lillooet Secondary School, and 7 in Brampton, Ont. He is currently a guitar/bass teacher at the Long &McQuade Lesson Centre in Abbotsford.

You can find JAAZ on Facebook.

You can listen to them on the YouTube page.

By Mike Archer. There’s part of me that is pleased as punch to see two of the most vacuous members of the Canadian media go down in history as the the senators who destroyed the senate.

For make no mistake, as the economy starts to fall apart Stephen Harper will try to make his own cynical appointments work in his favour by making the public’s reaction to Mike Duffy and Pamela Wallin into an election issue.

Having ridden to power on a promise to end the senate he will now use the grotesque misuse of taxpayers’ funds by his own appointments as a reason to get rid of the body.

Much like Christy Clarke used the economy she has ruined as the the media message back to power, Harper will try to use people’s outrage at the behaviour of his two sycophants, who weren’t even journalists (they were TV talking heads) to try to regain power after his government has failed been failing on all other fronts including, for the first time, the economy.

Christy Clark demonstrated that, as long as politicians talk about the economy as though they know what the hell they’re talking about, the voters, who spend very little time educating themselves about what is really going on, will vote for the face that seems to understand their fear of losing their job; their car; their credit; their house or their line of credit.

It matters not one iota that the woman spouting the crap about the economy has increased the chances of you losing your job and that her party has ruined the economic prospects of BC … she told you she cared about you.

And Stephen Harper will ooze care about you too. Hey may even put on a sweater. So long as you forget what he’s done to the economy and concentrate on the fact that he cares about the economy and ridding the taxpayers of this evil institution called the Senate which wasn’t a problem until his appointees began fleecing the Canadian taxpayer.

And it will probably work.

The Guerilla Gardener. Brenda Dyck is a writer and self-styled guerilla gardener whose wit, sense of humour and plain old commence sense will help you enjoy some of the chores that stand between you and the reward of a nice plush garden.

The Guerilla Gardener
Definition: Using unconventional gardening ideas,
to get maximum results from minimal resources.
By Brenda Dyck

Recession vs. Depression:
So what does this mean for a Guerilla Gardener?

It means that during this recession if I have to curb my spending on my garden I’m going to go into a deep depression.
I mean seriously, gas prices are up, food prices are up, and the company I work for has decided no one is getting a raise until June. What’s a Guerilla Gardener to do?

Since skipping meals is out (at least that’s the consensus around my house) and siphoning gas is illegal (although it might just ensure me three square meals a day), I’m going to have to think outside of the ‘box’ in order to fill my garden beds and pots.

Fortunately, being a Guerilla Gardener this isn’t hard.

Here are a few Guerilla Gardener ideas to get you through the recession without going into a depression:

Check the Internet –score cheap or even free stuff for your garden! Be sure to check regularly for deals. Here’s a few to get you started:

Freecycle – www.freecycle.org
Request and offer all kinds of items, specific to your area by searching with your town’s name. There are over 1200 members in Chilliwack alone! You need to sign up with an ID and password and the best part of this website is everything is absolutely FREE!
Craigslist – http://geo.craigslist.org/iso/ca
Check out the free section or if you have a little spare cash check out the gardening section for
some great deals.

Dumpster Diving – Recycled bikes, teapots, dish pans, or boots make interesting planters or
imaginative focal points in the garden. If anyone tries to make you feel bad about it, just tell them you are saving the planet by recycling. Then make them feel guilty that they are not. After all, they don’t have to know that you are just trying to save money

Yard Sales – Map out a route using Craigslist or your local newspaper. Estate sale and moving sales always have the best stuff, especially if they are in upper class neighborhoods. This applies to thrift stores too!

Remember … timing is everything

Flea Markets –The Abbotsford Flea market runs every Sunday at the Abbotsford Exhibition Park grounds and is well worth the 75 cents for admission! You can buy annuals, perennials, and even water plants for unbelievable prices. If your not picky and you wait until the end of the day you can pick up a flat of annuals for about $5-7 a flat or less!

Garden Clubs – The Chilliwack Garden Club has a plant sale table available most months with donated plants, seeds, books etc. for purchase-by-donation. Membership dues are $25.00 or $30.00 per family per year. Contact Jack Kouwenhoven 604-792-2051 for more information.
Homemade Weed Killer – Environmentally friendly, cheap and works great!

In a gallon jug mix 3/4 gallon white vinegar (10% will work but 20% acidity is better) 3/4 cup table salt, and 1 tablespoon dishwashing liquid together, close the lid and shake. Transfer it to a spray bottle. Spray it on the weeds in the heat of the full sun but be careful, it will kill whatever you spray it on!

Plant Markers – Cut up plastic mini blinds cut up to make plant markers and then use an indelible felt marker to label them.

Seeds- collect free seeds from existing plants.
Next month’s article will have a lot more detail on this money saving technique.

And remember timing is everything! The best deals on annuals start about June and for perennials late in September and October.

Submitted. On April 12th Langley RCMP responded to a break and enter in the 19900 block of 50A Avenue where unknown person(s) entered the residence sometime between 1:00 and 6:00 p.m. earlier that day.

Entry was gained through the front door of the home. It is believed the suspect(s) may have been interrupted as they left because items were dropped on the floor.
Fortunately for the home owner, costume jewelry of little value appears to be the only thing taken.

Police conducted neighbourhood inquiries in the area and one of the residents advised that a Caucasian male, mid 40’s, 5’10”, slim build, short hair, wearing a green jacket had rang her doorbell at around 3:00 p.m. The male asked her if “Mike” was there. When he was told he had the wrong residence, he moved along. This might not be suspicious had the break and enter victim herself not had a scruffy white male attend her residence a couple days prior asking for “Michael”.

It is possible both “Mike / Michael” incidents were the same individual ‘casing’ the houses to see who was ‘home’.

Residents are encouraged to report suspicious people in your neighbourhood to police. Cpl. Holly Marks suggests, “Let’s all look after each other. Just pay that little bit extra attention when a ‘stranger’ is in your neighbourhood. You might just stop the next break and enter.”

The City of Langley would like to remind all residents and businesses of the lawn sprinkling regulations that will be in effect from June 1, 2013 through September 30, 2013.

During the summer months, seasonal rainfall is at its lowest and water consumption due mainly to outdoor use almost doubles. Sprinkling restrictions during this period of time help manage demand on the existing Metro Vancouver and City water distribution systems. As lawns require only 2.5 cm of water once per week to stay healthy and most sprinkler systems can deliver this quantity of water in one hour, the following restrictions have been put into place:

Please note that the regulations affect residential and non-residential properties differently and that watering in the early evening is now prohibited.

We thank you in advance for continuing to partner with the City of Langley and Metro Vancouver in making effective use of our precious water resource.

The BC Election is over, both historical and histrionic as the ‘public’ polls were completely wrong. An unparalleled win for the BC Liberals (actually gaining seats), campaign narrative loss by the BC NDP, and one for the history books, a seat for the BC Greens.

Sean Holman (@publiceyeonline) is a teacher and journalist who has followed politics in BC for years, and ran a radio show and online commentary with Public Eye Online. His weekly radio show, broadcast on CFAX and through the Bell Media network, was heralded for bringing in the top players on major issues – MPs, MLAs, Mayors, pundits and experts. The loss of his direct media outreach in BC is keenly felt, as Sean moved on from teaching at UVIC and running his show, to a position as assistant professor of journalism at Mount Royal University in Alberta.

On top of his role as a full time professor, Sean has moved into documentary film making creating the timely movie ‘Whipped’ – and we are delighted to have him as #YYJchat guest for Tuesday May 21st, discussing the recent election, and how party discipline disrupts democracy.

This documentary sheds light on that secretive system, revealing how much of a say our elected officials have in the backrooms and why they don’t speak up when their conscience and constituents are at odds with their party. (see the ‘Whipped’ website)

Submitted. With summer just around the corner, more people are taking advantage of warmer weather and longer days and enjoying eating a meal outside. Whether it’s a picnic with friends or a BBQ with family, Fraser Health has a few helpful tips to ensure food safety this summer season.

Don’t let nasty bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella ruin good times with family and friends. Here are a few easy ways to protect your food and yourself:

1. Clean and sanitize all food surfaces, cooking and eating utensils, especially after coming in contact with raw meat. A simple solution is one capful of household bleach in one gallon of water.

2. Kill harmful bacteria that cause food borne illnesses when grilling by cooking meat to 71° Celsius (160° Fahrenheit) and poultry to 74° Celsius (165° Fahrenheit). When in doubt use a probe thermometer.

3. Always keep raw meat separate from cooked meat.

4. Keep cold refrigerated foods like luncheon meats, pasta salads or other perishable foods in an insulated cooler packed with lots of ice or several ice packs.

5. Store leftovers in separate, shallow, covered containers in the refrigerator and eat within two days.

6. Remember to wash your hands well before preparing food and after handling food.

“You can be very conscientious with food preparation, but if you don’t practice good hand hygiene it will all be for nothing,” says Inderjeet Gill, Manager of Environmental Health Services at Fraser Health. “Proper hand washing not only protects you from food poisoning, but can also prevent many common illnesses such as colds and sore throats.”

By Lynette Greaves. The Spring/Summer 2013 Fashion Season is filled with styles in maxi length dresses, colour blocking, strapless everything, skinny jeans, vivid colours, very short shorts and stripes!

Thank goodness! The length of the dresses and skirts are longer this season. I don’t know about you…but I do not have the prettiest knees.

I love the fact that we ladies can now wear any length we find comfortable and flattering to our individual figures; without feeling that we are outdated and out of style.

LG Fashion By Dezign

I have always felt that maxi dresses and skirts were my favorite go-to summer fashion choice because I hate to wear stockings in hot weather. You can even survive dashing out of the house without shaving your legs–and still feel and appear, wonderful!

Versatility is the key to enjoying fashion. Choice is fun and variety is the spice of life!

I love colour block on dresses. My own LG Collection has a number of colour block dresses that are designed to make a woman’s waist appear smaller and longer. This trend is being embraced by almost every major designer. It can slim the entire silhouette of a woman’s body. It is a very flattering and quite timeless style that is suitable for all ages.

I have always been a big fan of strapless styles, particularly in dresses. I like to have an even tan (no strap marks). Strapless is the one and only way to accomplish this. I wear strapless dresses to the beach, for the evening, or with a light jacket or sweater for work.

Skinny jeans? What can I say? I love them! They are flattering and fun. This season they are being featured in bright colours, stretch cotton, denim or leather. This style is most suited to taller, slimmer figures; but can be worn by almost anyone when paired with high heeled shoes or sandles.

Vivid colours just make me s-m-i-l-e! Bright yellow, turquoise, royal blue, red, fuchsia pink—they are all gorgeous. Colour is what spring and summer are all about. I still love my basic black, navy and even chocolate brown (looks great with a tan), but colour is glorious!

What can I say about short shorts? They are majorly sexy! I used to wear them—when I was younger, slimmer. I am also quite tall…

Use good, honest judgement about the shape you are in and in what environment these are worn appropriately. Short shorts are made for those of us blessed with the right body and skin to make them appear truly flattering.

Stripes can look very fresh and nautical. The pattern is great for both spring and summer fashion and is hugely popular for 2013. Use good judgement about horizontal stripes if you are particularly well-endowed, it can certainly make you appear much wider. Vertical stripes in pants and jackets are, of course, always preferable.

Spring and summer are a time of sunshine and renewal. Brighten up your wardrobe with a little vivid colour and you can update your closet without breaking the budget. If you shop right, you may even be able to utilize your summer colour purchase for year-round wear.

————————————–

Lynette Greaves

We’ll enable you to make the most of your wardrobe, your time, and your hard-earned money.

I want you to LOVE yourself when you look in the mirror…and FEEL as good as you LOOK!
